The Islands of Jamaica

There are approximately 25 islands in the waters immediately surrounding the main island of Jamaica. Some are inhabited, some are not and at least one is operated as a resort island. Let's take a look at these often forgotten islands of the Greater Antilles.

One such collection of islands is that of the Port Royal Cays, located just off the coast of Port Royal. Most of the islands are uninhabited, and some are very close to the Jamaican mainland. In fact, the northern most cay is Gun Cay and it is just 400 meters from the Jamaican beach. The largest in the Port Royal Cays is Lime Cay, with an area of only two hectares. The other cays in the group are small, with vegetation and uninhabitable.

The smallest of which is Rackhams Cay, named for the pirate Calico Jack. Jack was most famous for the design of the Jolly Roger flag that has become synonymous with pirates, and for having two female crew members which was unheard of during the Golden Age of Pirating. When Calico Jack and his crew were finally caught, tried and executed in Port Royal. After being hanged, their bodies were tarred, hanged in a cage and put on display in a gibbet. The gibbet was erected on a very small islet just off the coast of Port Royal, and what is now called Rackhams Cay.

Kokomo Island is located in Montego Bay, just like the Beach Boys song suggests. There is no evidence that the island was named after the song, in fact it is more likely the song was named after island. The island is only 2.5 acres in area, owned by Sandals Royal Caribbean and has had its name changed to Sandals Cay. The resort on the island is lush and exclusive, catering to couples looking for a tropical vacation.

Navy Island is one of the Jamaican islands that have a more interesting history. Located off the coast of Port Antonio, Navy Island was originally awarded to Governor Lynch by the Crown for services rendered. He named it 'Lynch's Island' for the time he lived there. When the Governor passed away, the island was used by the Royal Navy as a gun battery, and the name was changed to 'Navy Island'. World War II came and went, as did the ownership of the island. It was finally purchased by Errol Flynn, who used it as a place of sanctuary. He never built a permanent structure there, only a thatched roof shack near the dock. The next purchaser of the island was a land develop from Los Angeles. Len Koutnik tried building a very exclusive, very luxurious private resort on Navy Island but had trouble coming up with the money. As he took up investors he gradually lost interest and ultimately sold the land to one of the investing parties. Villas were built, construction on a hotel began and staff were hired to service the resort. However there were worker uprisings, legal problems with the use of the beaches and facilities, all finally leading to the abandonment of the island. The Jamaican government eventually purchased all the remaining land titles, but has yet to do anything with it. Navy Island is considered one of the most picturesque islands in the Greater Antilles, yet it is left in a state of neglect.

There are many other smaller islands in the waters of Jamaica, many too small to be of more use than a resting spot during a day of snorkeling. Nevertheless, the islands do offer travelers the opportunity to explore and perhaps find a long lost treasure from the Golden Age of Piracy.

Are We Nearly There Yet?

Travelling with family is a romantic notion that sounds like a fantastic notion when thought of in that sense. However, in reality, it is not quite the amount of fun you may have thought it was. Many do it and then vow never to again. However, if you are going to travel and you have children, there are some ways to make the journey more tolerable.

The safest way to minimise having to deal with children on a journey by car is to drive when they are likely to be sleeping. If this can't be done then at least let them burn off their excess energy beforehand by having them run around or engage in some other form of exercise. Obviously, don't provoke any excessive energy for the journey by fuelling them with sugary snacks or drinks. Also, have something at hand to entertain them with such as puzzle books.

If your children are a bit older, they may enjoy reading the map along the way. It can give them a guide as to how far they are away from the destination. This has the added bonus of not continually hearing the question, "are we nearly there yet?" When they get bored, you can keep them entertained with such games as "Eye Spy". It may be worth researching other games you could play in case they get bored of that one.

If you're travelling by plane, things can get even more interesting. Children certainly don't enjoy queuing and rarely understand why they have to queue for so long. Subsequently, waiting with them at the departure gate isn't a picnic either.

Once your children are on board, the fun really begins as you will then be forced to keep them busy for potentially a long flight. The answer to this, if your preparation was right, lies in your flight bag. There will hopefully be some items to keep them entertained such as an iPod or snacks. Snacks are almost essential as the food served on the flight may not satisfy them and then the whining could really begin to escalate.

Skyscrapers of Miami Florida

Miami is undergoing a major change, what many are calling the 'Mahattanization Wave'. As of 2008 there were 60 proposed structures for the downtown area that will rise to over 450 feet. These are in addition to the existing 32 skyscrapers already complete, the tallest one being 789 feet tall. In terms of size, Miami's skyline is ranked first in the Southeast United States and third in the whole of the US, immediately after New York and Chicago.

To clarify, a skyscraper is not defined in terms of a specific height. The classification of skyscraper comes when the building in question rises above all the surrounding built environment and changes the city's skyline. So, in reality a town with a church that has a ten story steeple and all other structures are just two or three story buildings will have the church designated as its skyscraper. Although, it is important to note that viewing towers are not considered skyscrapers, such as Toronto, Canada's CN Tower and Orlando, Florida's SeaWorld SkyTower.

The tallest building in Miami is also the 51st tallest in the US and the 163rd tallest in the world. The Four Seasons Hotel Miami stands at 789 feet and was built in 2003. The building has three lobbies, with two on the first floor and one on the seventh. The first two lobbies serve the two main purposes of the building: commerce and residential. The seventh floor lobby includes a two acre outdoor terrace highlighted by a large swimming pool. The pool sits on the roof of the sixth floor of a 934 space parking garage.

The second tallest building in Miami is the Wachovia Financial Center (1984), although it did hold the distinction of being the tallest up until the Four Seasons was built. The Wachovia is the tallest office building in Florida, standing at 764 feet. The 1.2 million square feet of commercial office space is spread over 55 floors, and during construction each one of those floors were completed in a five day period - an amazing feat during the 1980's.

The Marquis is the third tallest building in Miami, and the tallest residential skyscraper in the Southeastern US. Standing at 700 feet, the Marquis has a total of 67 floors - the most of any Miami skyscraper. The first three levels are dedicated to retail and a hotel, while floors five to fourteen are for parking, hotel units and related facilities. The rest of the building houses the private residential suites some priced as high as seven million dollars.

In 2008, what is now the fourth tallest building in Miami was completed. Named for its address, the 900 Biscayne Bay stands 650 feet tall and has 63 floors. Among its 1.5 million square feet there are 516 condominiums, with units priced in the $500, 000 to $3 million range. With the growing number of skyscrapers popping up on the Miami skyline, architects are more challenged to create pleasing lines and facades. 900 Biscayne Bay was designed with that in mind, as its angles are proportioned according to its height.

The Metropolitan Miami complex houses the fifth tallest building in Miami, the Wells Fargo Center. It was completed in 2010 and stands 647 feet tall in all of its 46 floors. The Wells Fargo Center is also referred to as the Met 2, purely for its location within the complex. It is actually two adjoined buildings, housing commercial office space. Aside from its distinction in height, the Met 2 is also known for NBA star's Shaquille O'Neal involvement in the project.

Miami has one of the most recognizable skyline's, not only for the skyscrapers but for some of the unusual architecture. Seen from the street as well as the sky, Miami offers wonderful sights and sounds to the traveler - no matter where their interests lie.

Luxury Rental Car In Vegas

I've been to Las Vegas several times and have not been let down yet. The food seems to get better and the entertainment is consistently outstanding. I don't know what made me do it but on one visit I invited my friend to join me after a conference had ended. We wanted to hang time and Vegas seemed like to place to play! I had already decided to use an Exotic Car Rental in Las Vegas so it just came down to which company and which car. I was a little excited but had no idea what was about to happen. I rented a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder which is one of their convertible models that was this Neon Green color. People ran up to me saying "What do you do" and "rev the engine some". I'm not used to getting so much attention but with an exotic car with such loud colors it was hard to be subtle! So should you decide to have the ride of your life and get an exotic car rental in Las Vegas then consider the following:

1. Shop around

Las Vegas is known for big money and big fun so it stands to reason that the market for an exotic car rental in Las Vegas is also big. You won't find as many companies in most cities with the exception of Miami and Los Angeles. But competition runs in your favor as you can pick and choose with whom you do business. Whereas one company has a large fleet to choose from, they may not offer "partial day" rentals of 6 hours like some of their competition. Compare the cars too since two companies may offer a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder but one is several hundred dollars less than the other. Sometimes the less expensive one is a few years old. "Who cares" you ask but some renters only want the latest models. Gotta love competition!

2. Pay attention to the details

For any exotic car rental in Las Vegas there is a mileage cap. This is meant to keep the miles low and therefore the maintenance cost low...or lower since they are never "low". The mileage cap ranges from 50 miles a day to 150 miles per day. Every mile driven above the limit will cost you from $1 to $3.50 for EACH MILE! So don't think you'll drive to Los Angeles and back without laying down some serious cash!

You also will have a cancellation policy that prevents you from cancelling at the last minute. If you don't cancel prior to the 48 to 72 hour window, you may be charged the full rental price or several hundred dollars. If you remember that this isn't Avis or Budget but a high end rental then you will remember to tread carefully.


3. Insurance, wrecks and other fun details...

For any exotic car rental in Las Vegas you will need to provide proof of auto insurance. It doesn't need to be from Nevada but it does need to be in force at the time you drive. Check with your insurance carrier and tell them you plan to rent an exotic car that is worth $250,000 and ask them specifically what happens if you get into an accident. I did and found out that they will repair a $450,000 Lamborghini Murcielago up to it's replacement costs. Good news. But if I hit another expensive car (very likely to happen in Vegas!) then they will only cover $100,000 in property damage. So just don't hit another Murcielago!

One thing my carrier does not cover is "incidental claims". The rental company makes money renting cars and you wreck their car. If it takes 2 weeks to repair then they lose out on the lost rental income but your insurance probably won't cover "lost rental income" so the rental company may come after you for this. The devil is in the details!
