Good Driving Habits For Everyone

By Adriana Noton

One of the earliest memories before getting a drivers license was finding out that driving was a privilege. Many may assume that it is a necessity to drive a vehicle or automobile. Granted, there are risks that do out weigh that privilege, but by practicing some good driving habits, lessens the risks of being involved in an automobile accident.

Of all the statistics out there today, one of the most prevalent probably known is that of being in an automobile accident verses being in one at work, sports or home. These can become timely, not to mention costly, but above all never drink and drive or under the influence.

In most cases when we think of driving habits the most common of them come to mind. Of these would be using turn signals, driving the speed limit and so on. Lets take a deeper look and an all around trip into not only making it safe but practical for all occasions.

Even the best of drivers whom may have never been in an accident do this simple first step, called a pre-trip inspection. In all actuality there are two different types of license; a drivers license and a Commercial Drivers License or CDL. For those with a CDL have to do a pre-trip inspection. It is pretty basic an simple; check the oil, signal, brake and head lights, tire pressure and so on. Although the CDL inspection is more intense, everyone is still encouraged to do the same.

Now that the vehicle has been inspected and is in safe operating condition, we shall focus on dialing in the mirrors. A good measurement when setting the mirrors is that the lines are still visible from where the tail lights are within the mirrors. Always be sure to make a quick turn checking in the blind spots of the vehicle, making sure to not totally rely on the mirrors.

Some may not know this, but semi-truck drivers rely on their mirrors. It is common practice for them glance at both sides while driving usually every couple of minutes, if not sooner. With that being said, here are some tips when driving with CDL or semi-truck drivers in traffic. If possible, try not to drive beside the semi-truck and trailer, as these are the biggest blind spots. Flash the head lights of the vehicle if the CDL driver is trying to merge lanes. This lets them know they are clear to merge over. Most of all, when following, keep their mirrors in view.

Some of the worst instances and accident to ever be in have been with road rage. Although at times it may not be easy to pull over. Depending on the location of where the direction of travel is, try to remain calm until able to do so. Once the vehicle is stopped, vent all that is needed or until the emotions are intact. Some neglect that a vehicle weighs over a ton and any mistakes made can cost thousands if not lives.

Take deep breaths or find the nearest place to pull over if needs be. Vent the frustration out while stopped, because the road needs undivided attention. Be sure to have the route planned out in advance, along with having a back-up or detour route in case of accidents or construction. Might not even hurt to keep a few extra dollars hidden in case of emergencies. Maybe it all comes down to being courteous and awareness, but being prepared from the start with the necessary car insurance Alberta is the best driving habit to be practiced.
