Visiting New York City Helpful Tips & Suggestions

By Adriana Noton

For travelers visiting New York City helpful tips about how to move around and see the top attractions, find hotels and restaurants, etc. Are actually more essential than just helpful. While every traveler has likes and dislikes, some of the things listed below will come in handy for just about everyone. After all, everyone will be heading for the same top attractions, and the best way to get around is good for all travelers.

Local Transport: An overwhelming majority of travelers coming to NYC prefer to take a cab in from the airport, and then complain about the charges and cabbies. It would be far cheaper and better to the bus service. Those flying into JFK and LaGuardia can take the New York Airport Service into Manhattan, and those coming from Newark can use the Go Airlink service to reach a Midtown hotel.

For moving around in the Big Apple between boroughs, it's much better to use the subway or the buses. The MTA issues passes which can be used on both, and subway maps can be found everywhere so it's quite easy to use. It's easier if the visitor's hotel is close to a subway station, but it's not absolutely essential.

Hotels: Searching for the right hotel out of the tens of thousands available is no easy task, and it depends a lot on what the traveler is looking for. But on a general note, it's not really required that every tourist has to stay in the middle of Times Square, or in Manhattan. These days, a lot of smart travelers are saving big bucks by finding better hotels on the other side of the Hudson, in New Jersey.

It is only a 5 minute ferry ride from here to the main tourist attractions in Manhattan. More importantly, these NJ hotels are a lot cheaper and the rooms larger than what Manhattan can offer. But to be fair, it's possible using new online booking tools to find decent lodging at an affordable price in a good location in and near Times Square, Broadway and Central Park.

Meals: Again, this pretty much depends on what the visitor prefers to eat. NYC is famous for its huge variety and ethnic dining choices. Cheap fast food is available everywhere. Visitors can save a lot by eating in places like Chinatown or some well-known diners in Brooklyn, instead of a tourist-trap restaurant in Times Square. Don't forget to pop into Little Italy and check out a few historic pizzerias.

Attractions & Tours: It's pretty much impossible to visit and see every attraction in the Big Apple. The easy way to sort it out is to join a tour group or hop on one of the iconic sightseeing buses or double-deckers. A Circle Line cruise wouldn't be a bad idea, and a free trip on the Staten Island ferry would be a good idea too.

The ferry ride and cruise will offer a pretty good view of the Statue of Liberty. As for the rest, the attractions that are on every visitor's itinerary include Central Park, the Empire State Building, Times Square and Broadway, and the MET Museum. This pretty much covers the basic "visiting New York City helpful tips" guide for visitors new to the Big Apple. The important thing to remember is that fast-paced NYC can be confusing for first-time visitors, so it's better to plan for it beforehand.
