The Benefits Of Undergoing Cold Laser Therapy

By Adriana Noton

Unlike other medical or cosmetic procedures, cold laser therapy doesn't use light beams in a destructive way. Why it's named as such is because it uses low level light beams. Because of this, it's also sometimes referred to as therapeutic or soft laser. It doesn't produce heat which can translate to pain felt by the person exposed to it.

There are numerous people taking advantage of this treatment because it offers different benefits to the health. Some doctors also recommend their patients to undergo such, depending on the condition. Usually it's used together with other treatment forms, like the use of prescription drugs, physical therapy, etc. But as of the moment, opinions regarding the effectiveness of the treatment still vary greatly.

According to its proponents, low intensity light beams can have a positive effect on tissues, especially those which are injured. This aids in the healing process as it promotes cell division, especially protein cells, thereby shortening the recovery period. It also helps in the development of new blood vessels. This allows more blood, nutrients and oxygen to get to where they're needed - injured body parts.

Body parts suffering from pain and inflammation are also thought to benefit from the therapy. This is because of the speeding up effect to the normal reparative process. With shortened recovery process, an injured person can bounce back from it as soon as possible. It's normally employed for back pain, arthritic pain, sprains, tendonitis and other injuries.

Another contribution of the treatment is faster healing of wounds. This is related to the increased rate of protein cell multiplication. But proof to such claim is insufficient as there's no conclusive evidence to it. Currently there are studies being conducted on how effective this treatment is for wound healing. However, many individuals suffering from wounds have noted significant improvements after having a prescribed number of sessions.

Speaking of which, the number of session needed will depend on the extent of the injury or how long it's been around. For acute pains and inflammation, it normally takes 8 to 10 visits, although some people noted that they attained instant relief right after the treatment. On the other hand, chronic cases may require more sessions, sometimes more than 20 times. Most sessions can last for under 5 minutes only.

It's also used it as a substitute to acupuncture. Instead of using needles, beams of light are focused on certain body points. This is said to yield the same benefits as when needles are being used.

You may encounter clinics claiming that cold laser therapy is an effective way to get rid of smoking addiction. According to their claims, the treatment helps in boosting the amount of endorphins in the body, copying nicotine effects on the brain. This is what's said to cause the smoker to crave smoking less. But as of now, no evidence to such exists. There are also clinics claiming this treatment can help deal with hypertension, cerebral palsy, herpes, migraine headaches, etc. Be wary when choosing which clinic you should go for, as some of them use only LED and not laser.
