Make Holiday Travel Part Of The Fun

By Ralf Simpson

Whether you are getting to your vacation destination by car, train, boat, plane or bus, the voyage begins with holiday travel. If the location is any distance away, you my as well factor in that time and make it a pleasant experience. With a bit of forward thinking and careful planning, the journey can be fun.

From Smokey and the Bandit to Thelma and Louise, the road trip is well established in American folklore. Pack the cooler with ice and canned drinks, prepare a picnic and select your favorite motoring tunes and you're on your way. You move at your own pace. Navigating can be as simple as planning your route with military precision, typing the destination into the sat nav or just crossing your fingers and going for it.

Letting the train take the strain means you are free to enjoy scenery you might miss if you were at the wheel of a car. It also means someone else has the hassle of getting there while you surf the internet on your laptop. In the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe, you also have the option of booking a sleeper car and travelling through the night.

There are all sorts of cruise holidays. Destinations vary from the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and across oceans. Modern cruise liners are self-contained resorts in their own right. Whether you take a three-day cruise down the California coast to Mexico, a week-long trip up the fjords in Norway or a world cruise lasting a month or more, there are swimming pools, games and activities to keep you well occupied.

Airline travel is the fastest choice of conveyance for short hops or for the long haul. Here, again, someone else is at the controls. Friendly people bring you food and drink right to your seat while you catch up on your reading or sample the in-flight entertainment.

Travelling by bus or coach is probably the cheapest option. Modern rolling stock is air conditioned and the seats can be quite comfortable. Whichever method you choose, holiday travel is part of the vacation.
