The Best Bits of Mpumalanga in South Africa

By Rob Atherton

Situated in the north east of the country, Mpumalanga is home to about 3 million people and the most celebrated safari park on earth; the Kruger National Park. However, there is a lot more to Mpumalanga that Kruger.

The province is really a wonderful, land-locked place featuring remarkable landscapes and lots of wild animals. Right here is the heartland of South Africa's safari territory and is made up of the Lowveld and the Highveld.

The Lowveld is the place beneath 1,000m above sea level. Its more or less open woodland interwoven together with long grass and a good amount of game. Broadleaf and thorn trees will both seen in this low-lying subtropical climate.

To the far north of Mpumalanga, the legendary Baobab trees reign over the skyline. Wide, slow moving rivers shrink to isolated pools in the course of the dry season and is the time animals gather together which makes it a good time for game watching.

The Highveld is notably colder, with rolling grassland, wild blooms and a large number of pine plantations. Trout fishing is excellent at the dams and streams close to Dullstroom and Lydenberg.

The main selling point of Mpumalanaga is unquestionably the Kruger National Park. This large wilderness covers an area as big as Israel and is well-known for having the finest variety of wildlife varieties in Africa; 140 mammal species, 500 bird species and about 300 tree species. Camp places and game lodges are all available.

Over the borders of the national park are various private game reserves presenting 5-star safaris. These lodges offer you fantastic overnight accommodation and tend to be a lot less congested. Their safari trucks also can go off road something which isn't allowed inside national parks.

The province is furthermore home to an area of the grand UKlahlamba Drakensberg mountains and it's right here you can see the Blyde River Canyon. It's the third largest canyon on earth. The vistas are beautiful with the vantage point of 'Gods Window' being the best place to look over this dramatic panorama.

Mpumalanga is certainly a province for all those in search of the outstanding outdoors with terrific safaris, eye-catching scenery along with hiking, biking and fishing.
