Have you ever visited a place, and thought to yourself 'why is this not a more popular tourist destination?' You can feel like you've gotten away with something when you stumble onto a stunning beach, or eat some spectacular food, experiencing something beautiful and unforgettable which no one else seems to know about. This article is about that kind of experience.
These experiences are even more special when you think about the fact that many of the most famous tourist destinations are often overrated. Even when the places themselves are good, the fact that there are always so many people there saps any magic or serenity that the place may once have had. Truly great holiday experiences come about when you are free from expectations, and free from the crowd.
The Grampians in Victoria, Australia are one such place. They are a rough and beautiful mountain range lying just to the west of Melbourne, and they are relatively unknown. They are only really visited by the local Victorians. This is a terrible shame, for the mountains offer some glorious views, and are an incredible place for hiking. However, in one way it is probably better that these places do not suffer the impact that tourism brings.
Plenty of people travelling to Vietnam only go to Hanoi, Saigon and Halong Bay, thinking that that is all there is to see. If you stray a little from these more popular places, however, and head to the town of Hue, you will not be disappointed. This place was once the old Imperial capital, and has not really changed since the royal family left in 1945. There you will find a glorious Citadel which used to house the royal family for generations, and which was nearly destroyed in the conflict known to the Vietnamese as the American war.
As you can see, even countries that are popular among tourists have places that people tend not to know or care about. These places offer a great opportunity to the more interested traveller, to see some beautiful sites, free from the hustle and bustle.
