Best Practices Tips When You Join A House Swap Service

By George Talbert

House swap, or home exchange, is an innovative way to travel where you stay in someone's house and you make your own home available when you are away. People participate in these arrangements for a number of reasons, and there are many advantages to traveling this way. We've provided you with some useful tips for house swapping should you ever decide to give it a try.

Clear communications are so important before you agree to a house swap arrangement, and actually there are usually no problems. Regardless of who is staying where, the smart thing to do is put everything in writing for the agreement. So, for example, if there are any pets that need to be taken care of, or house plants, then ensure that everything is spelled out as to what needs to be done, etc. Both sides need to think about what is OK for the other party to use such as phones, or the PC (or MAC), or the stereo, etc. Perhaps if you reimburse them for any phone calls it will be acceptable, but it's best to have all of the conditions in writing ahead of time to avoid any misunderstandings.

Some people new to home exchanges have concerns about safety. As far as we can tell, and know, those who are in agencies are honest people and understand that they need to be respectful with other people's homes. Still, it's perfectly acceptable to ask for references before letting someone stay in your home. If you own the home, you may want to contact your insurance company to ask if such an arrangement will put you at any risk. If you are renting, you should mention to the landlord that you will be away and people will be staying at your house. The same goes for the reverse, the other people may wonder about you - and they may ask for the same things you want to ask for.

While home exchange arrangements can be a fun and enriching experience, they are not for everyone. Before you participate, you should make sure it's something you are comfortable with. If you find the idea of strangers staying in your home frightening or repellent, then this may not be the right kind of program for you. If you're open but not sure, then it's possible to do this over a weekend or other similar shorter term arrangements. It's really important to feel secure about the experience, and see how you feel coming home after someone else has stayed there for a few days. You may find that your fears were unwarranted, and you could next time arrange something longer. Bottom line, the hotels will always be at the places you want to travel to.

Yes, the home exchange arrangement can be exciting and fun if you like it. You can end up traveling to places you hadn't thought about, and you will also make worldly contacts with nice people. The best way to find out how you like it is to give it a try. You can always find out more, and you should in addition to what we've provided for you here.
