How to Avoid Dangerous Drivers on the Road

By Jessica Tamlin

When it comes to driving, it doesn't always matter how old you are or how much experience you have; sometimes people are just bad drivers. Unfortunately, because (as the name suggests) road accidents are impossible to 100% prevent, it's up to all drivers to try and pay attention to the dangerous drivers on our roads.

It's important to take note of both speeding and slow-moving vehicles. If a car in front is driving too slowly then don't make any rash decision when trying to overtake. On winding roads, never overtake on a bend, and on a motorway, make sure there's no speeding driving coming up behind you. Equally, if a car in front or behind is driving faster than the speed limit or fast in dangerous weather conditions, don't feel as though you have to match their speed. It's easy to find yourself matching the speed of a car in front even when it's dramatically over the speed limit.

There are many lazy drivers out there who don't think it's necessary to use their signalling correctly. Whether pulling out of a junction or moving lanes on the motorway, if you spot a car that's not using their indicators correctly then try and keep a safe distance away from them.

Of course there are many other types of dangerous drivers; those who use their mobile phones without a hands-free kit (remember this is also illegal), those swerving (could be a sign of a drink-driver), drivers who tailgate and even drivers that use the middle lane when the left-hand one is free.

It's not just that all of these individual actions are dangerous, but that they imply the driver isn't a particularly conscientious or considerate driver. Whilst the number of road deaths decreased between 2009 and 2010 (the 2011 statistics are yet to be released), every year there are still tens of thousands of road accidents and thousands of deaths caused by dangerous drivers.
