People With Bad Credit Can Still Get Auto Loans

By Denise Jackson

Sometimes even the best of individuals will have money problems that can spill over onto their credit report. Having a few black marks against your credit can make it difficult to get items on credit, particularly auto loans. That is not to say you cannot get the car you need. It just means you need to know a few important things before you head to the loan officer.

If you are having problems getting approved for credit you may want to stop everything you are doing and perform a complete assessment of your current credit file. The best way to do this is to get a current copy that covers all three of the major reporting agencies and fix any obvious problems.

High unpaid past due accounts or habitually late payments are your two worst enemies. Remove these from your file by filing a dispute or by paying them off. Also look for any incorrect information. Some past delinquent accounts that you have paid off may linger on your file and should be removed.

Once your credit worthiness has been established loan officers will look at your employment history. Applicants who have moved from job to job will have little luck getting the financing they need. If you have recently switched jobs but were employed for a long length of time at your last work, it should not be held against you if you have a good reason to have made the switch.

In certain cases it may be a requirement that you get a cosigner. This is someone who will agree to guarantee the loan should you default on the payments. You will need someone who has a very good credit rating and obviously someone who trusts you to do the right thing and make the payments on time.

Even people who have bad credit can get auto loans. It will require you to be proactive and take control of your credit history. Remove inaccuracies and don't be surprised if you need a cosigner. After you have successfully paid off the loan it will be easier for you to get the next one.
