A guide for discount hotels in any city

By Alan Tomsperfr

If you're trying to save money on your next trip then it's essential you book the right hotel, since there's not much room for maneuver on flights accommodation is the best place to save money. Here's a quick guide that I feel should work in any city and on any budget.

People sometimes get tempted by the idea of an "out of town" hotel away from the city centre as they are always cheaper. But remember you're going to have to pay for taxis or buses every day to get you back to the hub of the city, these costs can really bite into any saving on the hotel.

Many first time travellers live by hotel star ratings, but not all is as it seems. This is because there is not official worldwide grading for hotels, what a 4 star is in your home country may not be the same thing in your destination. Also many foreign hotels award their own star rating! For a real picture judge on the hotels listed facilities and not just the grade.

I've really fallen in love with a new booking idea called "secret rooms". Here you don't know the name or any exact details of the hotel, just the city and sometimes star rating, you only find out after you book what hotel it is. You could say it's a bit of a lottery what type of room you get but more often than not you get a high end room for a fraction of the price.

I know that most people love the idea of a weekend getaway but do you know that you're paying as much as 70% more for a room at the end of the week compared to the start? Yes you may have to take time off work instead but even then the savings for many travellers make it worth it, the best days are Monday to Wednesday.

This is kind of an in-direct saving but I always look for a hotel room that has some kitchen facilities so that I can make my own food. Remember that food is often a big expense on vacation and for budget travellers noodles and soup from the local supermarket can cut costs dramatically.
