More Major Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling

By Robert Nickel

In part one of this series we recommended checking travel arrangements multiple times before leaving home, and while on route to your destination. Mistakes in reservations can occur so easily, and so much money can be wasted on ticket changes that it is vitally important to make sure everything is in order several times before departing.

Shortly before or after making your initial reservations, double and triple check that all forms of identification are up to date. An expired driver's license can mean being turned away at the border. The same is true for an expired passport. If children are joining you, be sure to know exactly what documentation will be required to bring them safely across borders and back home.

When you are considering a foreign vacation, research your destination. Do not assume everything will be the same as at home, things like weather, currency, food, power hook-ups, manners, and language. Check to see what season it will be at the time of your trip. For example Australia has their winter when it is summer in North America. Examine the local currency, exchange rates, and typical prices for regular items. Especially if traveling to another continent, make sure you have adequate power converters to charge and use your electronics. Forcing the wrong connection will result in power outages and possibly fire.

Do some research on distinctive customs and manners in the country you wish to visit. What may be acceptable for someone from England may be considered offensive to someone in Japan, or vice versa. However, learning the local language is the biggest thing any traveler can do to gain respect among locals. Even if you struggle, making a solid effort to speak the language will gain you more patience and generosity among residents. Conversely, someone who barges into a foreign nation and demands that everyone speak English will only cause tension and animosity. Be respectful of the customs of the people, do not ridicule them or stare.

Traveling to a foreign nation can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. The best way to approach such an experience is with an open mind and absolutely no judgement. You are representing your country as you travel, so make those you meet feel positive about your home. Reciprocate kindness, generosity, friendliness, smiles, helpfulness and appreciation for the difference in each other. Do these things, and your trip will be wonderful. Neglect them, and the trip will likely be a disaster.
